With heavy snow across the Midwest this past week, livestock producers should be cautious. NDSU Extension Livestock Stewardship Specialist Gerald Stokka recommends keeping a close eye on weaned calves following a storm. Hypothermia and frostbite may be apparent immediately afterwards, but cattle can be at risk for pneumonia and other conditions for several weeks after severe events. “Stress in animals becomes compounded so add in weather, there may be some digestive upset, and they could come down with respiratory disease or coccidiosis.”
