Farming has become increasingly efficient in utilizing natural resources. North Dakota Irrigation Association Chairman Loren Dewitz says irrigation usage has increased across the state, especially with recent drought years. “There’s several areas in the state where permits are hard to come by because they don’t know exactly how much water is available,” said Dewitz. “We don’t want to be in a situation in North Dakota like they are in the southern states where they’re mining water faster than it can replenish.” Dewitz says irrigation technology has come a long way since he started utilizing pivots. “There’s a lot of variable rate irrigation now that’s more efficient where we can water exact zones.”
