Congress only has a short time to deal with its long ‘to-do’ list. That includes legislation to fund the government and an increase in the debt limit. James Callen Associates CEO Jim Callen feels the Senate should also prioritize confirmation of key trade officials. “One of the criticisms of the (Biden) administration has been that they don’t really have a strong trade agenda,” Callen told RRFN. “They do, in my view, have two strong candidates for those trade positions; Doug McKalip to be chief ag negotiator at USTR and Alexis Taylor to be US undersecretary of trade at USDA. Those nominations are currently held up. They’re going to have to be renominated next year and that will further delay the process.” Callen lobbies for agriculture groups, including the North Dakota Grain Growers Association.
