Stockmen’s Livestock Exchange owner Larry Schnell is seeing smaller runs of feeder calves this year. “There’s not nearly as many calves to sell this year as normal. We’ll be down at least 20, maybe even 30 percent as compared to a normal year.” Heifer calves are also being retained to rebuild herd sizes. Schnell believes prices will improve. “A 600 pound steer started around $2 and now we’re closer to $1.90. It’s typical to see a little loss in price in November, but I think we’ll get that back in the New Year when we start selling weaned calves.”
