USDA has invested the expansion of beef processing capacity. However, Iowa State University Extension Livestock Economist Lee Schulz beleives some meat processors are having second thoughts. “Some of those planned additions are being postponed indefinitely.” Numerous factors are at play. “The cost of building materials are almost 40 percent higher than two years ago. There’s also a labor shortage to work in plants and with the current cattle cycle, numbers are declining.”
