Milk production in the 21 major dairy states totaled 17.5 billion pounds in September, up 1.6 percent from one year ago. South Dakota had the largest surge in milk production, up nearly 15 percent. That is due to the size of the cow herd growing by 25,0000 head. Minnesota and Wisconsin milk production rose by a fraction oof a percent.
