Barge freight rates are at record highs due to the ongoing low water levels on the Lower Mississippi River. For the week of October 4, the average barge tariffs were 2,000 percent of their underlying benchmark rate. That’s 50 percent higher than last year and 131 percent higher than the previous three-year average. Another problem is on the horizon with the planned removal of a gas pipeline. A series of closures and restrictions on the Lower Mississippi River is expected through early November.
