Portions of the Mississippi River between St. Louis and New Orleans are at record low levels. Nearly all of the Mississippi River Basin has experienced below-normal rainfall this summer. With the water so low, shippers have voluntarily cut down to 25 barges per vessel. Typically, tows move 36 barges at a time.
