The White House is taking steps to improve competition in the meatpacking business. USDA will publish proposed rules within the Packers and Stockyards Act to protect farmers and ranchers from abuse. There’s also $15 million being made available for the Agriculture Department to collaborate with State Attorneys General to investigate price-fixing and other anticompetitive practices. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack is a member of the White House Competition Council, which met today.
