It can be difficult to pull the marketing trigger with the volatility seen in the grain markets. Advance Trading Commodity Research Analyst Brian Basting says farmers need to protect margins. “In the history of corn and soybean prices, we haven’t seen prices this high at harvest with the exception of 2012. Of course, that was the drought year when we didn’t have bushels to sell. We’re going to have bushels to sell this year. Protecting the margin is important.” Consider looking at the 2023 crop margins, too. “There are always black swans, unpredictable events, out there. All we know today is where the markets are trading. We need to look at the different tools available.”
