SDSU Extension State Climatologist Laura Edwards says the drought monitor has expanded across the region and impacts of the drought are seen in some corn fields. “South Dakota is a little bit more of a mixed bag where eastern and south South Dakota have been getting worse on the drought monitor.” More moisture is also needed for farmers getting into winter wheat planting. “The drought has been very unusual this year where it’s field-to-field and not even county-to-county. We’re in winter wheat planting now and a lot of those soils are tending a little drier than typical.”
