Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative Vice President of Agriculture Mike Metzger says pre-pile harvest is scheduled for August 29. “We’re making red x’s on the calendar. The one that’s circled in red is August 29, when we’ll get a few beets out of the ground. The big machine starts up on August 30.” Estimating the size of this year’s crop is challenging. “This one is tough to forecast. Our ag staff has the staff estimated at 22.5 tons per acre, but the yield potential with these new genetics, especially if we get rains, the sugarbeets may be poised to take off. We all agree, there could be a two, maybe three ton per acre upsize.”
