USDA has bumped up the amount of money available for its Spot Market Hog Pandemic Program to nearly $63 million. The Agriculture Department created this program in response to the COVD-related packer slowdown in 2020. Farmers who sold pigs between mid-April and September of 2020 are eligible for a payment of $54 per head. The payments are limited to 10,000 head per eligible producer. National Pork Producers Council President Terry Wolters said these funds will contribute to the ongoing recovery of the U.S. pork industry.
