House Agriculture Committee Chairman David Scott plans to introduce legislation to help small family farmers and ranchers while addressing the nation’s beef supply chain. “In our hearing examining beef market consolidation earlier this year, I was very disheartened to learn that the cattle industry has lost an average of 17,000 cattle ranchers per year.” Scott said farms with 100 or less head of cattle account for 90 percent of all farms and 44 percent of the beef cattle inventory. Scott’s bill is designed to strengthen the safety net for these operations, enhance insurance products and develop more direct-to-consumer opportunities.
