Milk production in the 24 major dairy states totaled 18.8 billion pounds in May. That’s down 0.6 percent from one year ago. Minnesota milk production declined one percent with the state cow herd declining by 9,000 head. South Dakota bucked the national trend and saw milk production increase more than 15 percent. In the past year, South Dakota added 23,000 head of milk cows.
