Crown rust has been identified in buckthorn in parts of South Dakota. South Dakota State University Extension Plant Pathology Field Specialist Connie Strunk says it’s only a matter of time before it makes its way to oat fields. “Typically, rusts don’t overwinter in South Dakota, but crown rust can reside in alternate hosts, like buckthorn over colder months.” Crown rust favors temperatures between 68 and 77 degrees and wet conditions. “It relies pretty heavily on the right environmental conditions. This year, parts of South Dakota are saturated enough that it could be a big problem.”
