Croplan Genetics Alfalfa and Forage Specialist Jeff Jackson reminds farmers to check re-growth. “As fields green up, farmers can do stand assessments. That includes not only driving down the road and checking, but actually go dig plants and check root health.” Alfalfa growers also need to do stand counts for viable plants. “There needs to be enough stems per square foot to be a viable stand. For most of the area, that will be around 45 and 50 stems per square foot. That would give growers a non-limiting yield situation. Anything less, take with a grain of salt and decide if it’s worth keeping.”
