At the Surface Transportation Board hearing on Tuesday, USDA Deputy Secretary Jewel Bronaugh referenced the Union Pacific delays in moving fertilizer, saying fertilizer and ag commodities should be a priority in the spring. “Especially as we now enter the growing season,” said Bronaugh. “Not only are rail service disruptions impacting the American public and our agricultural stakeholders, they’re also directly impacting USDA’s ability to hire and retain grain inspectors and carry out our responsibilities under the Grain Standards Act.”
