With alfalfa acres declining and drought intensifying, NDSU Extension Livestock Specialist Zac Carlson is advising ranchers to consider other options. “North Dakota is fortunate that we have quite a few alternatives. Distillers’ grains, wet corn gluten feed, wheat mids, sunflower meal, and canola meal are all available through the different processing plants in the state.” Most of these facilities are in the eastern part of the state. “As you head west, they get fewer and fewer, but there’s still options, particularly with ethanol plants.” Information on alternative feed sources are available through the local Extension office.
