The U.S. Drought Monitor shows 46 percent of South Dakota is in severe drought, up from 25 percent the previous week. South Dakota Grasslands Coalition Education Coordinator Dan Rasmussen says ranchers have been selling cattle to get ahead of the drought. “For the past two and a half years and, in some areas, it’s been three years, South Dakota has experienced very little rainfall. It has come to the critical point where there are a lot of ranches, especially out west, where the grass is gone and there isn’t much hope.” Rasmussen says the long-range approach to drought planning starts with grazing management and soil health.
