Drought is impacting the Southern Plains during their graze-out season. Beef cows being liquidated at record speed. While many in the Northern Plains watched sales peak earlier in the fall and early winter, NDSU Extension Livestock Economist Tim Petry says the cow slaughter rate has picked up due to limited grass availability in the South. “This is the time where grass is greening up in Texas and Oklahoma; they’re really struggling.” Petry says demand for ground beef is adding fuel to the fire. “The cow market is hot. It’s went up about $10 in the last couple of weeks. Consumers fill up with gas and go to the store to buy supper where they buy hamburger instead of steak because gas is so expensive.”
