University of Minnesota Extension Wheat Breeder Jim Anderson says the farmers who are looking at new wheat varieties should look at the heading date and pre-harvest sprouting data. “On a one to nine scale, most of our materials evaluated in the region are a one or two, resistant to pre-harvest sprouting, but there are new varieties higher up on the scale.” Anderson has not heard of many seed supply concerns. “The bigger concern with seed supplies is the price of wheat went up so high going into the fall. Seed may have gone into the commodity market, but I haven’t heard of any general concerns surrounding seed supplies. As always, the more popular varieties can get tight and sell out by early winter, but hopefully, there are still good options available.”
