While milk prices are trading in the $20 range, U.S. milk production is dropping. USDA says milk production nationwide declined 1.4 percent in January. South Dakota is one of the few states with increased production, up a whopping 18.3 percent from one year ago. The size of South Dakota’s cow herd increased by 28,000 head. Minnesota milk production dropped one percent.
