The top turkey producing state in the country is on high alert after getting news of Indiana’s confirmed avian influenza cases. “As we saw this developing in Nova Scotia, there were positive birds in a flock in the Carolinas and Virginia and now, a commercial farm in Indiana,” says Thom Petersen, agriculture commissioner, Minnesota. “We’ve been working with the Minnesota Board of Animal Health to make sure farmers across Minnesota have biosecurity plans in place and they’re taking precautions. We are also working with the USDA Wildlife Service to track flight patterns of migrating birds.” Minnesota had an outbreak of avian influenza in 2015. Petersen reiterates how important it is for growers to follow biosecurity protocols. “If you have concerns, reach out to the Board of Animal Health. We’ve been through this before, but I think it’s getting extremely serious right now.”
