North Dakota Wheat Commission Policy and Marketing Director Jim Peterson says it has been difficult for some grain elevators to secure rail cars on the spot market. “There’s probably some overlap interplay from some of the intermodal and bigger picture supply chain issues where they use the same power, labor and rail lines. We’ve also had shots of cold weather and very good soybean demand off the Pacific Northwest.” Peterson also says export demand may not have come in as strong as expected. “When everyone wants freight the value triples. That comes out of the local basis or the sale is deferred to a cheaper time,” The uncertainty of car placement is a bigger issue with domestic mills in the central and southern United States close to shutting down, because of a lack of spring and winter wheat.
