Market competition isn’t a new issue for agriculture, but U.S. Cattlemen’s Association Vice President and South Dakota rancher Justin Tupper says the COVID-19 pandemic brought market competition issues to light again. “People have called to tell me they don’t want more federal government or regulation, but there’s no other way to get out of this than to absolutely disembark the big four packers and that’s a lift I’m not sure how to get to. We either need a referee in the game to make this fair for everyone or we break them up.” A spokesperson from the North American Meat Institute, a trade association of meat and poultry processors, said the White House is eager to announce $1 billion in spending again, but also hasn’t engaged with packer processors since the summer. According to NAMI, there are many questions and few details about this government market intervention.
