The strong winds and dry weather that hit the central and southern Great Plains this past week wreaked havoc on the wheat crop. USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey says the wheat crop in Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma was in good shape heading into December before weather conditions took a turn. “We have seen some adverse conditions over the last three weeks starting with warm and dry weather. Then less than a week ago we had this dust storm that created winds that were as high as 75 to 100 mph or higher”. The USDA is expected to provide more information at the end of the month regarding wheat conditions. “It’s been a tough start for a wheat crop that’s already had some challenges going into the establishment and planting season with the lowest rated wheat crop in almost a decade since the autumn of 2012.”
