This past year, CHS’s agronomy and grain divisions outperformed energy. As a member of the CHS board of directors, Rugby farmer Steve Fritel is pleased with how the energy business is coming out of the pandemic-influenced slowdown in transportation. “The gorilla in the room is electric vehicles and how will that play out and how will we play in that arena.” Fritel says CHS is considering its role in a changing energy sector. “The new thing is the soybean oil being used (as a renewable diesel fuel) and in reality there isn’t enough soybeans grown to meet that industry, the food industry and we also have to think of China and their appetite for soybeans.”
