Farm input costs are up and it has been difficult to source the products needed to put in a crop. BASF Director of Marketing Robbie Upton says the supply chain situation extends through the entire economy. “This is a supply chain that is stressed; a supply chain still dealing with trade war impacts, pandemics, natural disasters like the hurricane at the Gulf, labor availability.” Upton said BASF crop protection products will be available for the 2022 growing season. The supply chain disruptions have influenced buying decisions with farmers attempting to secure crop inputs as soon as possible. “I think we saw what we might call unnatural behaviors in 2021 and we might see that in 2022 and that is not helpful,” said Upton. “Think back to the toilet paper shortage, rushing out to buy product unnecessarily is not going to help. That’s why we recommend for growers and retailers to plan together to determine their true needs so we can get products in the right place at the right time.” There are reports of shortages with some post-emergence herbicides. Upton advocates the use of modern pre-emergence herbicides with a longer residual to extend the impact of post products. Listen to the full interview.
