South Dakota Representative Dusty Johnson has new bipartisan legislation called the Cattle Contract and Library Act of 2021. This bill would make cattle marketing agreement data available through the USDA’s Agriculture Marketing Service. “Packers already need to file regular information on things like price with the USDA. This is just an extension of the existing authority. They’ll also file information on contact prices. This would be helpful information to farmers and lawmakers as we try to figure out what’s going on.” The bill is being considered in a House Agriculture Committee business meeting. “I’m hopeful we can get the bill out of committee and down to the House floor. I would like this to move on it’s own as a standalone bill.”
