Corn and soybean farmers across the Midwest experienced a range of weather conditions in 2021, from early-season drought to heavy rain throughout the Corn Belt. Farmers also managed various disease, insect and weed pressures, including tar spot, Sudden Death Syndrome, corn rootworm, soybean gall midge, waterhemp and Palmer amaranth. Now, the results are coming in at harvest. “In the the Eastern Corn Belt, yields are coming in strong, but there’s a big concern about stalk quality and integrity,” said Steve Wilkens, agronomy manager, Golden Harvest. “The later in the season we harvest, the more standability issues farmers will likely have.” In the Western Corn Belt, the crop is holding together well. “The crop has some wind damage, with pockets challenged at harvest,” said David Schlake, agronomy manager, Golden Harvest.
