The number of cattle and calves on feed as of September 1 was 11.2 million head. That’s down one percent from September of 2020. Placements totaled 2.1 million head, up two percent. Marketings came in just under 1.9 million head, which was slightly below the year ago level. The cattle inventory was down 18 percent from last year in Minnesota and up five percent in South Dakota. Placements were up 17 percent in Minnesota and down six percent in South Dakota. In Minnesota, marketings declined 14 percent. For South Dakota, marketings increased nine percent.
