Packer concentration has been an ongoing discussion point in the livestock industry. “During the pandemic, we saw the risks with a highly consolidated supply chain; we had plants go offline because of COVID and all of a sudden the boxed beef price skyrocketed and the cattle price plummeted,” said North Dakota Farmers Union Government Relations Director Matt Perdue. “We are focused on the enforcement of antitrust laws and providing support for local and regional processors so we can have a more deconsolidated sector.” Perdue praised the Biden Administration for its work on this issue.
