Wednesday’s roundtable discussion wasn’t the first meeting North Dakota Senator Kevin Cramer’s had about the enforcement of Waterfowl Production Area easements. “We’ve had a number of meetings over the years. We’ve had a lot of the same land owners attending this meeting as in other administrations. They keep giving progress reports on the appeals progress and maps.” Cramer says Assistant Secretary Estenoz will now take back what she’s learned in North Dakota to the department and see if there’s a way to improve the appeals process. “Depending on her response and the agency’s response to hundreds of appeals by land owners in the Dakotas in Minnesota, we’ll decide after that whether there’s a next step. Perhaps litigation outside the administration or maybe we’ll see changes to allow us to continue working with the agency.”
