The big spread between packer profits and cash cattle prices continue to deliver heartburn to the beef industry. American Farm Bureau Federation President Zippy Duvall says more market transparency is needed. “We need a fair price for our cattle.” AFBF, National Farmers Union, R-CALF USA, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and Livestock Marketing Association met in mid-May to discuss the crisis in the cattle industry. During an interview with the Cromwell Ag Network, Duvall describes it as a ‘historic’ meeting. “There’s no excuse for packers to make $1,000 on every head of cattle that they slaughter and we just get pennies back on the farm because we’re feeding those monstrous companies.”
