USDA is investing up to $1 billion to start building a better food system. With this effort, USDA will purchase $500 million in domestically produced food through The Emergency Food Assistance Program. Up to $400 million will support local, regional and socially disadvantaged farmers so they can produce food for food banks. Another $100 million will be in the form of grants to build the capacity of food banks. These grants will be used to support underserved communities and communities of color.
