U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai answered trade questions from the Senate Finance Committee on Wednesday. Senate Agriculture Committee Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow expressed concerns about the sanitary and phytosanitary barriers for ag exports. “We address these concerns by engaging,” said Tai. “It depends on the economy if we use free trade agreement tools, regional trade agreement tools or WTO tools to resolve the problem. That’s what the game is about, engaging in order to resolve problems, in order to create the policies and policy solutions that will empower the U.S. economy, growers and our workers.” Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley asked Tai about the implementation of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement. Mexico is rejecting glyphosate imports and put a hold on the biotech approval process. Tai agreed to bring up the issue when she meets with Canada and Mexico later this month.
