Livestock producers continue to struggle with low prices and high input costs while packer margins are profitable. Lakefront Futures market analyst Darin Fessler says the livestock markets are broken. “The cattle producers can’t make much money at these prices, but the packers can.” Fessler says the cash cattle market has been very difficult. “Something needs to be done differently in the packing industry. When one is making $600 to $700 per head, and the customer is losing a couple $100, there’s something wrong with the scenario.”
