On Thursday, the Biden Administration released the Conserving and Restoring America the Beautiful report, a path forward to conserve 30 percent of the nation’s lands and waters by 2030. The preliminary report outlines eight principles to guide the effort, including one that honors private property rights and supports voluntary stewardship efforts of private landowners and one recognizing the current conservation efforts of farmers and ranchers. One specific area of focus for the administration includes rewarding conservation efforts of farmers and ranchers through existing USDA programs. The new campaign also establishes an interagency working group led by the U.S. Geological Society, USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to create a Conservation and Stewardship Atlas. An annual report will also give an update on the efforts, with the first to be made public at the end of 2021.
