Dean Knell, who farms near Hazen, says there’s poor soil to seed contact right now. “That’s not typical in the spring. It’s a different seeding for us and we’re trying to figure out how to manage it going forward. Right now, it’s a little disappointing.” Small grains were seeded three weeks ago, in mid-April, but emergence isn’t great. “You can see the small grains coming up in the lower areas and it’s less in the higher ground. Emergence is poor with the plant stand. A rain could even that out, but we need a lot of rain to get where we need to go at this point.”
