The National Milk Producers Federation wants trading partners to live up to their end of the bargain in the U.S.-Mexico-Canada-Agreement. According to NMPF CEO Jim Mulhern, that was a big part of a half hour Zoom call with U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai earlier this week. “Canada’s quota access is provided in a way to discourage its use, going to industrial processors instead of resale or wholesale. Those with the quotas don’t have a need to import the product. That doesn’t meet the spirit of the letter of those negotiations.” The U.S. dairy industry is not only concerned about Canada, but trade with Mexico. “There are labeling regimes happening and other challenges at the border. We’re not sure where this is coming from, but these are departures from our long and positive relationship with Mexico.”
