The latest U.S. Drought Monitor says extreme drought now covers more than 70 percent of North Dakota, covering the west, central and northeast portions of the state. The rest of North Dakota is in moderate to severe drought. All of South Dakota is dry, with only a portion of north central South Dakota in extreme drought, but the rest of the state’s dryness ranges from abnormally dry to severe drought. Minnesota’s dryness is improving, with much of the state in the abnormally to severe drought category. A corner of Kittson County, in northwest Minnesota, is in the extreme drought category.
