The USDA is expecting an 18 percent increase in canola acres for North Dakota this year. If realized, canola acres would reach 1.8 million acres. NDSU Extension Crops Marketing Economist Frayne Olson is not surprised. “Canola prices, at least on the futures market, are at high levels. There was little doubt in my mind we would see at least a holding or a possible expansion of acres, like canola.” Olson is surprised with USDA’s durum, dry bean and corn acreage estimates for North Dakota. “I was anticipating a flip of durum acres, but the durum plantings came in lower than anticipated. I thought there could be a larger cut in dry edible beans and was also expecting a larger increase in corn acres. I think there are some prevent plant acres uncertain at this point.”
