In her first interview since being confirmed, U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai said the United States is not ready to lift tariffs on Chinese imports. U.S. businesses have been hurt by the tariffs, but Tai said these tariffs also shield companies from subsidized foreign competition. Tai said the U.S. would also lose leverage in its negotiations with China if the tariffs were removed.
