U.S. Wheat and Barley Scab Initiative co-chair Richard Magnusson says the group is currently analyzing research funding projects for the coming year. “Scab rears its head in durum or soft red wheat areas in general. We know it’s weather-related and probably have a better handle on it due to the more resistant varieties and better management techniques. However, it’s not gone. It may be more of an ongoing challenge for barley than wheat.” The U.S. Scab Initiative is considering proposals. “Some of them are looking at novel ideas that haven’t been done before, but it comes down to better management techniques and what solves the problem long-term.”
