Strong canola prices are encouraging more canola acres in the Northern Plains. Northern Canola Growers Association Executive Director Barry Coleman is talking to farmers ahead of the March Prospective Plantings report. “From the people I’ve talked to recently, the best guess I have is 1.8 million acres or more for North Dakota. If realized, this would be record acres,” said Coleman. “Canola prices range from 29.5-to-30 cents per pound, near record levels. New crop canola is more than 22 cents per pound.” Mother Nature is a wildcard when it comes to getting those acres planted. “We’ll need timely rains for the entire region in the next few months. There’s a good chance we’ll get the moisture we need.”
