Mississippi River grain barge operations continue to improve. According to USDA’s Grain Transportation Report, the Army Corp of Engineers are expected to re-open Mississippi River Lock 25 near Winfield, Missouri soon, allowing for the 2021 navigation on the Upper Mississippi River. For the week ending March 13, barge grain movements were 810,000 tons, five percent lower than the previous week, but 52 percent higher than last year. More than 13,000 grain barges moved down river with 851 grain barges unloaded in New Orleans. U.S. Class 1 railroads originated 26,400 grain carloads during the week ending March 6. The average March shuttle secondary railcar bids per car were $328 above tariff for the week ending March 11. That is $41 less than the previous week and $459 more than the same week one year ago.
