USDA’s Grain Transportation report for the week ending January 14 shows rail and barge shipments at 3.3 million metric tons. That’s down six percent from the previous week, but 51 percent more than one year ago. U.S. Class 1 Railroads originated 27,700 grain carloads during the week ending January 9, that’s 12 percent more than the previous week and higher than average. Barge shipments of grain totaled 914,800 tons, 40 percent more than the previous week and 76 percent more than the same period last year.
