The National Pork Producers Council submitted comments to the USDA this week on a proposed rule for gene editing in livestock. In those comments, the council said the U.S. has been at a disadvantage compared to others like the European Union in being able to access the animal health and food safety advancements. The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service already has a review process in place for gene editing in plants and the council thinks this could be a model for livestock.
