Ag lobbyist Jim Callan says many of the big issues in the year ahead for the North Dakota Grain Growers Association deal with conservation. “Wetland mitigation will be a big deal for us in 2020 and it will be again in 2021. Crop insurance and protection against budget cuts are also being monitored.” Tom Vilsack has been chosen as the next agriculture secretary. Callan says this could bring a more traditional approach to the USDA. “Some of the other candidates up for nomination were a little concerning. I think North Dakota would have preferred former Senator Heidi Heitkamp, but we can certainly work with Secretary Vilsack and look forward to doing so. There will likely be some significant challenges ahead for him, but we are optimistic we can work together well.” Callan participated in the North Dakota Grain Growers Association’s annual meeting on Wednesday.
